- The following are results of testing a variety of screen-speeding
- software on a PCs Ltd Turbo Clone equipped with a Genoa Spectrum Video
- Board and a Princeton Max-12 monitor. Test 1 and 2 use a screen-writing test
- which is included in ZENO.ARC (original source unknown, downloaded
- from a local BBS) which writes 6 screensfull of asterisks and times
- the writing (not in seconds). Test 3 and 4 use a second-hand to time
- the writing of a 7296-byte file to the screen (not terribly accurate, but
- indicative).
-
- The PCs Ltd clone uses an ARC Turbo motherboard, and uses Ctrl Alt GreyMinus
- to switch between 4.77 and 6.77 mhz. FANSI 1.17 was used for the test.
- (Actually, FCONBETA from FANSI117.ARC, before I learned that 1.17 was
- beta test and 1.15 was production. Additionally, I used Ctrl Alt GreyMinus
- to switch speeds, which may explain later results.)
- Switches were /q=1 /s=10000 /x=7 /y=1
-
- Test 1: Zeno TEST: write 6 screens full of asterisks:
- Plain Turbo +Zeno +Zeno w/Turbo
- Plain 165 106 63 40
- NANSI 165 105 62 40
- FANSI 96 96 41 41
-
- Test 2: Zeno TEST, with Genoa Spectrum SM MGF:
- Plain 152 98 60 38
- NANSI 152 97 60 38
- FANSI 77 77 38 38
-
- Test 3: Type 7296 byte file to screen:
- Plain 26 18 26 14
- NANSI 22 13 26 14
- FANSI 7 7 7 7
-
- Test 4: Type 7296 byte file to screen w/ Genoa Spectrum SM MGF:
- Plain 21 13 17 12
- NANSI 17 11 17 11
- FANSI 11 11 8 8
-
- The following was done after obtaining TAIWAN.PCH and applying it to
- FANSI 1.15:
-
- Test 5: Zeno TEST again, without SM MGF:
- FANSI 1.15, no x=7 142 96 65 42
-
- Test 6: Zeno TEST again, with SM MGF:
-
- FANSI 1.15, no x=7 121 77 60 38
- FANSI 1.17, FCONSOLE, x=7 BOMBED (Hersey says not 1.17)
- FANSI 1.17, FCONBETA, no x=7 121 121 61 61
- FANSI 1.17, FCONBETA, x=7 121 77 61 39
-
- Test 7: Type 7296 byte file to screen w/ Genoa Spectrum SM MGF:
- FANSI 1.17, FCONBETA, x=7 15 11 16 8
-
- The above appears to show the following:
-
- -The Beta version of 1.17, with x=7, equals the TAIWAN.PCH'd version of
- 1.15.
-
- -Zeno appears to add some WD-40 to FANSI's 3-in-1-oil.
-
- -The Fconsole version of 1.17, for Taiwan clones, has problems, at least with
- x=7.
-
- -Ctrl Alt GreyMinus does nothing to aid performance (as in Tests 1 - 4),
- although it does aid visibility of speed. (With all but FANSI, the turbo
- switch changes the cursor from a blinking underscore to a blinking
- rectangle - with FANSI's Ctrl Alt \, you can't tell by looking what
- speed you're running. This may be a picayune annoyance to No Smoking
- Software, but it's important to the ever-growing number of Clone users
- out here.)
-
- Overall, FANSI shows significant improvements over NANSI, and in operations
- involving more than screen I/O, also over ZENO. And that's without considering
- all the other things that FANSI does. Hersey says Zeno is less compatible,
- but it doesn't affect 80% of users. I find it disappears my cursor from
- time to time, particularly with Sidekick. It also occasionally turns my
- screen into a honeycomb after Sidekick, requiring reboot. This, obviously,
- is considerably more disconcerting.
